DVD: Asterix and the Magic Potion

A CGI Asterix film (this version dubbed in English) loosely based on one of the books, but with a refreshing rewrite to include a girl as the central character of the situation.

Getafix the Druid is starting to feel his age and decides to train a successor, a young girl. In particular, she will need to learn how to brew the magic potion that protects the village from the Romans by giving the villagers temporary super strength.

The film is true to the spirit of the Asterix series with multi-level jokes and slapstick violence from and between the Gauls. It is a very good film for someone new to the Asterix setting as it explains about the magic potion in some detail.

Because the film was only made in 2020 the more questionable racist** and sexist elements that sometimes appear in the original Asterix books have thankfully been expunged.

** Many Asterix books get their storyline and humour from blatant cultural stereotyping, that is not what I am referring to here.
